Hall-of-Famer C. Everett Bacon '13 Given Wesleyan's Highest Athletics Honor

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES FIRST CLASS OF INDUCTEES INTO ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Wesleyan University is proud to announce the selection of eight individuals and three teams into its newly established Athletics Hall of Fame. The following seven prominent Wesleyan graduates and one long-time athletic coach along with a series of three football teams will be inducted into the Wesleyan University Athletics Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Friday, May 23, 2008 at noon in Beckham Hall in Fayerweather during the university's
reunion/commencement weekend. The Athletics Hall of Fame will be located in the Warren Street lobby of the Freeman Athletic Center.
Chosen for the first class of inductees as individuals are C. Everett Bacon '13, an All-American quarterback as well as an outstanding basketball, tennis and baseball player for the Cardinals ; Bill Belichick '75, who played football, lacrosse and squash at Wesleyan and owns three Super Bowl rings as head coach of the New England Patriots of the NFL ...

Brother Bacon was raised in Middletown and and a member of the Xi Chapter since his first year at Wesleyan. According to his obituary in the Middletown Press, "Bacon's gridiron exploits at Wesleyan University earned him induction into the National Football Hall of Fame in 1966 as one of the 'pioneers' of football. A decade later, Sports Illustrated profiled him, noting he was able to 'shoot his age' on the links well into his 80s." Considered the premiere quarterback in the east his senior year, and perhaps the most accomplished at the the forward pass. He is still considered one of the finest athletes in Wesleyan history.
Following his years at Wesleyan, Brother Bacon had a tremendously successful career as an investment banker on Wall Street for decades. He was an early supporter of education for African-Americans. He helped raise funds and served as a trustee for four predominantly black colleges --Morehouse, Spelman and Bennett and Atlandta University. As a trustee for Wesleyan, Bacon served with pride. When it came time to build a new athletics complex, the name for the state-of-the-art 60,000 square foot Fieldhouse was named in Brother Bacon's honor.Click here to download a file containing numerous news clippings on Brother C.
